Cookie policy
The short version: we use no cookies. We do measure use of the site, and we count pages and actions, never people.
The policy
A site without cookies
This site uses no cookies, neither its own nor third-party ones, and stores nothing on your device: no local storage, no session identifiers, no markers that would allow you to be recognised on a later visit. That is why you will see no cookie banner: there is nothing to accept.
We do measure use of the site, with a tool of our own, and we would rather tell you exactly what it does than settle it with a short sentence. It is set out in the next section.
The measurement
What we measure, and how
The measurement is ours and lives on our own domain. There is no third-party analytics service, no advertising, no embedded social networks: the browser sends a few pieces of data to a volcano.works address and there they stay. Our network provider, Cloudflare, processes them on Volcano's behalf and uses them for nothing else.
For each visit we record the page that is opened; the domain you arrive from, only the domain and never the path or parameters of the previous page; a window-width band out of six, from narrow mobile to very large screen, never the exact resolution; the country the network indicates; whether a diagram is opened full screen, whether a button is pressed, whether a form is sent, how far down the page is read and how many seconds it stayed open.
In the simulators we also record, for each slider you have moved, its name and the final value you leave it at: not every movement, but the position where you stop. It is a number on a scale identical for everyone, it says nothing about you, and it tells us which assumptions really get tested and which interest nobody. The amounts you type into the text boxes never leave your browser: the simulators calculate right there.
We do not record your IP address, any persistent or session identifier, or combinations of technical data from which a fingerprint of your browser could be reconstructed. We count events, not people: two visits from you and visits from two different people leave exactly the same trace, and there is no way to tell them apart. The code that does this is deliberately short, and an automated test checks on every delivery that it still cannot store any of the above.
If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, or you have Do Not Track enabled, absolutely nothing is sent. The data is kept for 90 days and then disappears; of that material we keep only aggregated summaries, without any individual detail.
Legal basis: legitimate interest (art. 6.1.f GDPR) in knowing how our own site is used, with a measurement that identifies nobody and does not follow you beyond here. Since we neither store information on your device nor access what may already be there, the prior consent requirement of art. 22.2 of the LSSI does not apply.
The reason
Why we use no cookies
Because we do not need them. This site sells no advertising, embeds no social networks or other third-party widgets, and does not need to recognise you between visits in order to work: every page is served the same to everyone. The simulator calculates in your own browser, without sending your data to any server; the forms send what you write directly to our request management provider, without passing through any intermediate tracking.
We would rather ask you for less, not more: the data we really need in order to assess your case we ask you for directly, at qualification, we do not collect it in the background while you browse.
For any question about this policy you can write to hello@volcano.works or use the contact form.
