What is a venture builder?

A type of organisation created to have from the outset every component needed to build a company, solid and verified, and available as the starting point of every project.

5 min read

That reusable base reduces the risk of the hardest phase, the one from problem to product. And it makes every company that reaches the market cost less and fail less than if it were built separately. The term is still young and is easily confused with neighbouring models. Here it becomes clear what distinguishes it from venture capital, an accelerator and an incubator, and what Volcano does differently within that same category.

The term

A relatively new term

Venture builder is still a young term. It became popular as startup incubators grew, to describe something different from what already existed: an organisation that does not merely fund or advise the building of a company, but builds it itself. And it does so systematically and repeatedly, with its own team and a method reused from project to project.

The comparison

The difference from venture capital

A venture capital fund is not an operating organisation: it assesses teams and ideas that already exist, by its own criteria, and puts in money in exchange for a stake. It does not run the company's day to day. A venture builder does the opposite: it involves itself in daily operations, and when it holds a stake in what it builds it is not (only) because it has put in money, but because it has generated the idea and worked, side by side, on building it.

The comparison

The difference from accelerators and incubators

Accelerators and incubators accompany one specific, time-limited phase: a programme of weeks or months, or the earliest start of an idea that already exists and belongs to someone else. They contribute mentoring, contacts and sometimes a workspace, but the startup remains, from the outset, the property of the team that brings it. A venture builder covers the whole journey, from ideation to a possible flotation, and often originates the idea it builds on itself.

The structure

The three models, in one picture

Three dimensions are enough to tell them apart: how far each model involves itself in daily operations, where its stake comes from, and what stretch of the journey it covers.

Who does what: four figures compared

Venture builder against venture capital, accelerator and incubator A comparison table of four models across three dimensions. Daily operational involvement: venture capital low, accelerator and incubator medium, venture builder high. Origin of the stake: venture capital from the money put in, accelerator and incubator from money and mentoring, venture builder from having generated and built the idea. Time span: venture capital a one-off round, accelerator a programme of weeks or months, incubator an early phase, venture builder the whole journey from the idea to the exit. Dimension Venture capital Accelerator Incubator Venture builder Daily operational involvement Low: assesses and funds, does not operate Medium: mentoring and a fixed programme Medium: space, resources, support High: builds alongside the team Origin of the stake From the money put in From money and mentoring From resources and space provided From having generated and built the idea Time span A one-off round A programme of weeks or months Only the earliest phase The whole journey, from the idea to the exit
The venture builder is the only one of the four that covers the whole journey, from the idea to the exit.

The mechanism

How the model works, in general

A venture builder keeps its own team with diverse capabilities (technical, product, legal, commercial) that it shares among all the projects in its portfolio, instead of recruiting them from scratch for each one. It assesses many more ideas than it finally builds: it is normal to discard the great majority in the validation phase, before committing serious capital, the same logic described by the TRL pyramid. When an idea passes the filter, the venture builder contributes team, method and capital at once, and retains a significant stake in exchange, precisely because it has been an active part in building it, not a mere funder.

The difference

How Volcano does it, differently

Volcano fits the venture builder category, but with a deliberate difference from the more closed model (the pure «studio», which builds only on ideas generated behind its own doors): Volcano explicitly opens the door to what arrives from outside. A validated problem, an idea, a capability or someone else's network come in by the same route as an idea born in-house, and turn into a stake in exactly the same way. It is the extended theory of capital applied to the very definition of the model: it does not matter where what reduces risk or adds value comes from, only that it does. The detail of how you come in is in the eight doors.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a venture builder?

An organisation specialising in building companies systematically and repeatedly, involving itself in the daily running of each one, not only funding or advising it from outside.

How does it differ from a venture capital fund?

Venture capital assesses and invests in teams and ideas that already exist, without running the day to day. The venture builder holds a stake because it generates and builds the idea alongside the team, not only because it puts in money.

And from an accelerator or an incubator?

Both accompany one specific, time-limited phase (weeks, months, or only the start-up stage). The venture builder covers the whole journey, from ideation to a possible exit.

Do all venture builders work the same way?

No: some (the pure «studios») build only on internally generated ideas. Volcano also opens the door to problems, ideas and capabilities that arrive from outside.
