The frontier of knowledge
Where an invention begins, and why with us the effort is never wasted.

The inventor does not suffer from a lack of ideas, but from not knowing how far the known reaches: so they run the risk of spending their ingenuity rediscovering what already exists. We build a map of the edge of knowledge, we make every invention start at that edge, and we keep even the routes that do not reach the goal, because they often open another.

The inventor's real problem
Inventing is thought to be mostly a matter of ideas. It is not. The bottleneck, almost always, is something else: knowing how far knowledge has got. Without that map, a brilliant mind can work for months and arrive at a solution that someone, somewhere, already found and perhaps patented. The effort is no less brilliant; it is simply spent in the wrong place. It is waste (of time, of talent, of capital) and it does not come from the inventor's ignorance, but from the absence of a reliable map of the edge of the known.

A map of the edge of knowledge
Our answer is to build that map. Not a list of what is known, but a living representation of its edge: the line beyond which the unknown begins. Philosophers of science call it the adjacent possible: the set of what becomes reachable in a single step from what is already known. Innovation lives there, at the edge: not in the void, where there is nothing to hold on to, and not in the already explored interior, where all you do is rediscover. The shape
A fractal frontier
This edge is not a sharp line on a flat map. Knowledge has many dimensions (every discipline, every technique, every material adds one) and its edge is indented at every scale. Inside a region that looks settled, open micro-questions nest; between the islands of the known, gulfs of ignorance remain. It is an irregular surface, folded on itself, with endless inlets. The consequence is encouraging: there is always frontier left to explore, far more than a smooth world would let you imagine. And it also tells us how to move: you do not map the whole planet of knowledge; you travel it by degrees, choosing the region first and closing in on the exact point where the known ends.
The method
Starting at the edge, not in the void
Hence our choice of method, which inverts common practice. Normally the originality check comes at the end («is what I have made new?») once the effort has already been spent. We put it at the beginning: before generating anything, the system locates the region of the problem, gathers what is already known and shows exactly where that knowledge runs out. In this way every invention starts at the frontier by construction, and the ingenuity (human and artificial) is spent only where it can add something. That is what we mean when we say that here effort is never wasted.
The finding
Serendipity: not throwing away the side routes
While looking for one solution, others open up along the way. A route that does not solve the original problem may solve another; or it produces new knowledge that is useless today and precious tomorrow. The history of invention is full of these strokes of luck: discoveries made while looking for something else. A system that pruned every off-target route would throw away precisely the material from which much of the value comes. We do the opposite: we keep it. Every side result enters our estate as a finding, with an estimate of what it might be good for, and when a new problem arrives the system first checks whether there is already a solution waiting in the store. And whoever produced that knowledge is recognised when its value is realised, even years later.
The memory
We remember the failures too
There is an advantage that belongs to us and that nobody else has. A map built only on published science knows what works, but not what has been tried without success, because the world barely publishes negative results. We remember those dead ends. So our map marks not only the islands of the known, but also the shallows: «this was already tried here, it leads nowhere». On reflection, that is the information that saves the most effort. The more the system works, the more it becomes the only place that truly knows where the frontier is, because it is the only one that remembers the failures too.
The limits
What we do not promise
In fairness: there is no complete map of all human knowledge, and we do not claim to have one. Much knowledge is not digital, some is tacit, some is closed, sometimes it is contradictory. Novelty, moreover, is always an estimate: finding no trace of something is not certain proof that nobody has done it. What we build is a navigable approximation of the frontier in the fields we work in: dense where it matters, honest about its blind spots, and able to improve with every project. Even so, partial, it attacks the problem of waste and repetition at the root. And it is, in itself, an open line of research: one of the reasons why what we do is genuinely research.
